Prima - Hello Pastel with Michelle

Hi everyone!

It is so nice to be back here on the Scrappin' Patch blog with a couple of layouts using the new Prima range - Hello Pastel.

I was so lucky enough to be able to attend the SP Autumn Retreat at Glentui a couple of weeks ago and had an absolute blast.  It was so nice to put names to faces who I have spent time chatting to online and catching up with past design team members and Adrienne as well.  This was such a lovely and inviting event - everyone was so friendly and the food was well to die for!  If you are considering attending a retreat and thinking about it then I would totally recommend coming along in September!  I know bookings are coming in thick in fast so get onto it and secure your spot! 

Right back to the pretty papers!  My first layout is about my baby girl turning one!  The Hello Pastel papers worked so perfect for pretty girly pages and I just loved the pops of almost neon colour with the neutral grey.  I first sprayed my white card stock with Mister Huey's sprays Taxi and Mint Julep using my new Mister Huey's Chevron Mask.  I mixed up the patterned papers with stickers from the journalling sticker sheet to create lots of little embellishments on my page.  The other stickers are from my stash but were from Amy Tangerine's Remarks sticker book. 

My second layout using the Hello Pastel range makes use of the Parfait paper that has lots of little elements which are perfect for cutting out and using up as embellishments which is a really cost effective way of layering and embellishing your pages.  On my "Happy Bath Girl" layout I first misted a Mister Huey mask with Taxi, Mint Julep and White mists. I then added patterned papers to the right side of my photo, added a doily and then started to add the stickers from either the journalling sticker sheet or the little cut out elements from the Parfait Paper (HELLO, BEAUTIFUL).  Lastly to add balance to my layout I added a little cluster to the top left of my layout.

 You can see how I have added another layout to my HELLO and BEAUTIFUL by adding little banners from the same Parfait paper.

DT Inspiration - Bo Bunny Detour.

This is my last post for 2012!  Gosh, hasn't this year just flown by... I hope you have finished all your Christmas shopping and you are relaxing and enjoying a nice holiday break.

I have my last layout to share with you using the Bo Bunny Detour Range - it honestly was the perfect set of papers to do a layout on our major GPS fail when it sent us on a back road that was closed on our road trip from Brisbane to Sydney a couple of years ago now!

This layout is all about recording the memory... the road we ended up on was just horrendous and almost completely washed out in places.  It was one of those 'should we believe the GPS' moments or should we trust our gut instinct and not go the way it said we should. Over an hour round trip later... we shouldn't have trusted the GPS at all.   I created a border around my Kraft cardstock using the globetrotting patterned paper.  I then accented my photos using the chipboard pieces, fussy cut out the detour sign and finished off with some shipping tags which I just love for journalling.  

I have really enjoyed using the Bo Bunny Detour Range.  If you have some travel photos to scrapbook it is definitely one to have a look at in the shop!

A DIY Christmas Decoration

Hi everyone,

Tonight I am going to share with you a cute Christmas decoration that is super easy to make.  A few years ago I started a Christmas tradition where each child gets a new Christmas decoration for the tree with the idea that when they leave home they have lots of decorations to take with them to share on their family's Christmas tree.  This year I hadn't really gotten around to going out and getting each child a new decoration when I came across this cute tutorial by Lillyella to make Christmas decorations out of old holiday cards.  I thought it would be super easy to adapt this and use up some of my Christmas paper stash instead of cards and each child could have their own homemade decoration this year.

To make one of these decorations you will need - 

• 20 circles.   I used a circle punch to punch out my circles.  The larger the circle the bigger the decoration will be.
• You need an equilateral triangle, the size of your circles.  Lillyella has templates you can print out  that fits into 1", 1.5" and 2" circles here.  Unfortunately, my circle punch was an odd size so I just drew an equilateral triangle and made my own template pretty easily.  Create your template on a piece of cardstock so it is easy to trace around.
• A bone folder and ruler
• Glue - I used Henzo Quick Dry Adhesive which is AMAZING glue. 
• Twine or Ribbon to create the hanging part of the ornament.

To make the decoration: 

Firstly, punch out your 20 circles from your patterned paper.  I found that having 5 different patterns worked really well as it gave you variety without getting two matching papers joined together when the decoration is finished.  

Then using your equilateral triangle template - score a triangle shape onto the back of each circle.  The scored line needs to be on the back especially if you are marking it with pencil as you don't want to see this on the finished decoration.  Note, I didn't bother using a pencil as I found it was just easier to skip straight to the scoring stage.  When scoring your triangle onto the circle, make a note (I used a little T) to indicate the top point of the triangle.  This is useful later when assembling the decoration. 

Using the above score lines, fold the three lines up so that the reverse side (with the pencil lines is on the inside and hidden)

Next, adhere 5 circles together so that the top points of the equilateral triangle are all pointing together.  Before the glue dries, loop a piece of twine through the top points and tie a knot.  This forms the top of the decoration.  (as shown) 

Repeat above step with another 5 circles to create the bottom half of the decoration (without the twine)

Glue the last 10 circles side by side with the top points in opposite ends and then join them together to form the middle part of the decoration.  (as shown) 

To finish the decoration - glue the three pieces together!

These look really amazing on the tree.  I am just loving the handmade look and I may well start a new tradition of making each child a Christmas tree decoration instead of buying one.  Thanks for stopping by and I hope I have inspired you to make your own Christmas decoration!!

Bo Bunny Detour Collection

Hi,

It's Michelle here, tonight I'm going to share with you another layout I have created using the Bo Bunny Detour Collection.  

To create this layout I first sprayed with Granite Glimmermist and then I have used the tags and circle pieces from the reverse of arrow patterned paper below to create layers beneath my photo.  I just love how easy it is to fussy cut out the shapes and it really made creating my simple layout easy but still interesting to the eye at the same time.

Bo Bunny Detour DT Inspiration

Hi everyone,

Today I have a layout to share with you that includes some of the fabulous Bo Bunny Detour Collection .

This collection fits perfectly with all things 'travel'  from that overseas holiday to road trip adventures  around NZ.  I had a few ideas of layouts that I wanted create with this collection but it was only after starting to work with it did I realise how it could easily be used for fun boyish layouts as well.   

My first layout is some action shots of my family on the log flume ride at Movie World.  I really like how the pop of the colour red and blue work really well with the neutral tones in my photos.  I couldn't resist adding some texture paste with my new mask from Crafter's Workshop and adding a fun accent 'awesome' cut using the Cameo.

October Afternoon - here & now Album

Hi again,

It is time for me to share with you the finished pages of my mini album I have been working on over the last few weeks.  I am not a big mini album fan usually but can I say WOW... I think I may have been converted by the October Afternoon Here & Now Mini Album (OA MA).

It was so easy to pull together but today I wanted to share with you how I go about creating an album like this from it's conception to the finish project.  Not a blow by blow way of 'doing it' but more of what sort of things I think about when I am creating a mini album. 

Album Concept 

Sometimes I get layout or project inspiration from the photos themselves but other times creativity flows from the product itself which definitely happened with the OA MA.  I specifically, loved the 'word' themes that are on the front cover 'today' and 'play' and liked how these words worked in with capturing the moment.  

I also loved the colours in the October Afternoon Woodland Chapters that accompany the OA MA.  The colours in this collection were perfect for outdoorsey themes and specifically in this case for 'the beach'.   When I am creating a mini album - I like to use a specific event such as a family holiday where I usually take lots of photos that tell a story rather than beautiful portraits which I may prefer to highlight on a layout.  

A mini album is the perfect way to 'document' an event and a mini album provides the perfect backdrop to tell stories and traditions which is why I chose to document our last family holiday in Hahei.

The goal of the MA 

Next step in the process is to think about what I want to achieve in creating the MA.  Firstly, it is to hold all those photos but secondly as we travel and spend a week camping at the same spot each year, I wanted to document what happened on this specific year.  This year we had four members of our family on holiday so I thought that the chapter dividers would be perfect to record the favourite aspects of our holiday.  The lined pages of the mini album were perfect to use as a journalling page for each family member.  I used alphabet stamp to write the journalling prompts.

Organising Supplies

Next, I gathered all the supplies I thought would work with the album colours.  I really liked the OA Here & Now Chapters as they had really cool patterns and designs which I thought could be used as embellishments as well as background papers.  This makes the chapters and the OA MA good value for money as I had a lot to create with.   Some of them had beautiful detail on them, like the butterfly page above which I decided to leave blank to create white space and I felt it didn't need anything else on that page at all.   Other pages I fussy cut out pieces of them to use as embellishments on other pages.

Once I have my supplies, my photos and everything in one place then this is sometimes where I have trouble taking the plunge... but honestly, just get started.. there is no wrong way to put together the album.  To create flow and a story I have grouped my photos into different mini themes - like getting there and camp set up,  different aspects of general camp life and beach scenes.  In fact, one of the telling aspects of the whole holiday which was highlighted when I put together the OA MA is that there were less photos of Liam in general because the main thing he did on holiday was hang out with friends and not with us... slightly awkward!  But another important aspect for me is to create balance of pages between the different family members that were on holiday.  Something I need to work on for next  time is taking more photos of ME!  

Putting the Album Together

Right, now the fun part, I have used a mix of photo sizes in my OA MA from teeny tiny to 6 x 4 inches.  I wanted to create lots of texture, layering and interest on my album pages.  To do this, I have layered some of the busier patterned papers with the ruled lined paper and incorporated little plain tags to create pockets of interest and depth.  A lot of the time, it was working the colours in the papers in with the colours in my photos.  The bluey tones were perfect for the beach shots and I just loved the greens and pops of colour with the greenery of the campsite and our tent colours.  The sunshiney yellows remind me of the lovely weather we had and also worked well with the shots of the beach too.  

I also used a lot of 'word' embellishments instead of journalling throughout the album.  I love how you can buy sticker sheets with lots of different words and phrases which make summarising my thoughts super easy without having to actually journal on the pages.  This is super fast and of course great for someone who doesn't like to write a lot on their pages.

October Afternoon Sticky Keys with Michelle

Hi everyone,

I am working through my October Afternoon Mini Album and I am so super pleased with it.  I will be able to reveal all in my next post but for now I wanted to share a quick technique with you.

October Afternoon Sticky Keys are cute little Alphas that are perfect for using as titles or even a small amount of journalling on your scrapbooking pages.  

But I always end up having loads of spare letters that I never ever use!  Which can be frustrating and of course I can't bring myself to throw them out.  Usually I suggest you could doctor letters, turn 'J's into the letter 'I's and so forth which of course can't be done when the letter is enclosed in a circle.  

What about using them to create little scalloped borders?  

This is a great way of using up those extra letters as well as adding layering and depth to your projects. Be warned though, I found this little technique HIGHLY addictive and had to stop myself from using all the letters as borders rather than as titles on the page...

October Here & Now - DT Inspiration

Hi everyone,

It's Michelle here again with some more DT inspiration.  I hope you are are warm and dry wherever you are - the weather was so bad here in Auckland I literately had a river running through my backyard and a waterfall water feature on my drive !  I can't wait to scrap those photos!!  

For my DT inspiration this month I am going to share with you a mini book I am creating using October Afternoon's Here & Now 'Today' Chipboard Album. 

This is what the album starts off looking like.

What I love most about this album is that it is such a neutral starting point, it comes with more than enough lined inserts which make the perfect backdrop for your journalling and also for your photos.  The 5 x 7" size makes it perfect for scrapping 6 x 4 " photos or smaller (as I have done).  This chipboard album could be used for a multiple mini book topics... from documenting what your life is like 'today' to holidays and special events.  

Along with the above album, I also received the 'Here & Now' Chapters which come in three different themes which match in with the 'Cakewalk', '9 to 5' and 'Woodland Park' collection kits.  I received the newest collection Woodland Park which has gorgeous sea greens, limes and earthy tones which made it  a very easy decision to scrap our last year's inaugural camping holiday to Hahei beach on the Coromandel Peninsula. 

So...for my first DT instalment, I am going to share with you the front cover of the album: 

To accompany, the chipboard album, there are the Here & Now Chapters - these include four coloured divider tabs with a neutral grid pattern on the reverse side (more about those in a second) as well as two double sided die cut pages and 9 double-sided patterned pages.  

In creating my chipboard album, I decided to use these patterned papers to embellish some of my inserts as well as the front cover above which makes it a really cost effective little book as you don't have to go out and buy extra patterned papers (unless you really wanted too). You can see I have used a combination of the lined insert pages as well as some of the patterned Here & Now chapter pages on my front cover.  As you know I love to layer ... the front cover is embellished with a doily, some twine, a scalloped circle from the OA Woodland Park flower sack and a Chipboard Banner 

Lastly, I wanted to share with you what I have created with the four divider tabs in the Here & Now Chapters.

As there were 4 dividers in this set it fitted perfectly with the idea that I could use 1 divider for each member of our family on holiday, include a photo and on the grid patterned back, get each family member to journal their holiday memories.  I wanted to keep these quite simple, each divider actually has the words  'Name' and 'Date' on them but as I wanted to just use 'Name', I just placed a strategic piece of washi tape under the alphas to cover over the word 'Date'.  I just added a few little heart felt embellishments to create a more layered look.

More PP Spring Jubliee Inspiration

Hi,

This is the last layout I have to share with you that I have created with the Pink Paislee Spring Jubilee collection.  

I really wanted to create another multiphoto layout but using bigger photos and not small ones and this time around I fussy cut out the flowers and the birdcage from the Spring Jubilee - Bash patterned paper and used it to create frames around my photos.  The one thing I have discovered when using this collection is that the bright colours work especially well with black and white photos as the brightness in the papers really draw your eye into the photos themselves.  

To give the layout texture and more dimension I used a dienamics rolled roses die and created cute little paper flowers which you can see above to go along side some Prima flowers.  I have also added a Butterfly from a Spellbinders Fanciful Flight set and finished off the layout with some chipboard from MME Follow Your Heart collection.

Product focus with Michelle

Hope you are wrapped up warm and cozy on this winter's day. It is pretty miserable and wet here in Auckland - a perfect day to spend inside. 

Today, I was going to do a product focus for you on the gorgeous Prima Shabby Chic Resin Shapes but I noticed that when checking out  the shop to link up the product on this blog post.. that there isn't much of it left in stock.  So I decided to talk about SEVERAL different products that I have used this month as they are pretty cool too. 

I have used Pink Paislees' Spring Jubilee patterned papers mixed in with a small amount of MME Follow Your Heart to create the basis of my layout below.  This is fun, bright spring like paper range which is so lovely to work with this time of the year with the cold weather outside.  

Okay, I will start by talking about the Prima shabby chic resin.  These are totally gorgeous as it goes without saying with the Prima product lines.   I particularly like to use them clustered with amongst flowers and thought the lamp post fit in really well with the patterned paper.  To be honest, I prefer to use these resin shapes au naturel.  They really don't need a lot of work as they are gorgeous in their own right.  It couldn't be easier to just adhere the resin to your page where you want it.  Of course, if you wish you could add a little colour to the resin by using products such as mists, inks or stains to match in with your project.  

Next, I created the cute little tulle flowers using Trim from Glitz Design and adhering it in a circle pattern onto some Cosmo Cricket Glubers.   These giant glue dots come in 3 different sizes and make it super simple to create your own fabric flowers.  To create these tulle flowers I just twisted the tulle and then stuck it to the outside of the circle and moved inwards until I had reached the centre of the Gluber.  I then used my hot glue gun to stick a sweet button from MME Sweet Caroline Range .  

I finished off the layout using a mix of Prima flowers, some masking, a little banner and I fussy cut out some of the PP - Spring Jubilee: Party patterned paper to fit in under the lamp post.  Finished off by adding my title in the negative space of my photo.

DT Inspiration - October Afternoon

It's Michelle back again to post up some inspiration.  The last couple of month's have flown by and I've enjoyed creating with my latest design team kit.

For my first post, I'm going to share with you two layouts I have created with October Afternoon papers and embellishments from the Sasparilla Collection.   

This collection has a fun boyish theme but could definitely work with other photos as well.  I decided to scrap a photo of Liam on his 8th birthday posing with his sister when he was about to blow out the candle on his cake.

The background paper has unfortunately sold out in the shop (OA Stagecoach) but again wood grained papers are so popular in the scrapbooking world at the moment and I just love using them instead of card stock as they create interest without being overly busy.  I got lots of cool embellishments in my DT kit and one of them being the OA Sasparilla Flower sack which at $4.90 is really great value.  I wanted to do something slightly different than just layering these as embellishments on the page so I  folded a few of them in half to create a cute little banner at the top of the page.  I have also used them on either side of my photo to balance and interest as well. Of course, my page wouldn't be complete without tags, a banner and layering of patterned papers!  And did you spot those cute little people wood veneers... Gosh they are soooo cute!  They are sold out at the moment but I know that Adrienne has more on order... Studio Calico has a couple of other options including cameras and frames.. they are still available here

For my second layout - I challenged myself to use up the scraps from the first layout above.  Often I find this helps me decide how to create a layout and even makes it easier as a lot of the decision making on what to do is taken out of my hands.  I also wanted to create a multi photo layout as I think it is ultimately easier to just stick one photo on the page but at the end of the day.. that wouldn't get many photos scrapped would it?   

I also wanted to challenge myself to use the comic strip side of the Dash Dalton patterned paper.  To be honest, I first thought was I LOVE the denim side of this paper and there was no way I was going to use up the cowboy comic strip which was very busy.  But I didn't want to take the easy safe route and I wanted to show you how to use a busy patterned paper without overpowering your photos.  This layout idea came to me with a play on the theme of the comic strip of cowboys and riding horses etc but instead of riding horses I chose to use photos of Liam 'riding' the waves at Hahei beach last summer.  I then just cut out little segments of the comic strip and tucked them underneath my photos so you can see parts of the pictures but not the whole thing.  Then layering other papers and embellishments around and under the comic strip to create two little photo stories.   Keeping the other embellishments to a minimum and having white space on the layout helps to ensure the layout isn't too busy.

Technique Thursday!

Today I am going to share with you how to I created an effective but simple background using your masks and mists.  

As you all know I just love to layer on my layouts and I usually start off by adding a layer of colour to my layout using my mists and some masking templates.  It is a perfect way of adding extra dimension to your layouts without bulk and adding interest via colour to make your photos and any patterned papers really POP!   

There are so many cool templates out there at the moment and really the opportunities are endless... this is a layout I created using the last of my MME Miss Caroline papers from my design kit.  But first, I created the background using some glimmermist, The Crafter's Workshop Chicken Wire mask and butterflies masks by Studio Calico.   The chicken wire mask is my favourite mask at the moment as it provides subtle background interest without being too over the top!  I know that Adrienne is getting more stock of these in the shop so if you want one just let her know and she can put one aside for you!  

To create this background:

Firstly, set up a misting station, I generally use an old pizza box as this tends to contain the mist.  I grabbed a piece of plain white cardstock and thinking about where I wanted the focus of my layout to be I then added some pink glimmermist (Strawberry Shortcake).

Then I added my butterfly masks to the top left hand corner and sprayed over them with Slate Glimmermist.

To balance out the butterflies, I then added the Crafter's Workshop Chicken Wire template to the bottom right hand corner and resprayed with the Slate Glimmermist. 

That's it!  Super easy.. the hardest part is choosing which colours to use,   making sure you build up lightly with your mists and adding the elements in a complementary way.  As you can see in my layout, I have used a triangle shape to my design which is a great way of achieving balance on your layout as well as drawing your eyes into the focal point of my layout which is of course is my photo!

DT Inspiration

Hi everyone,

Here is my last full layout using the MME Miss Caroline range -- this range has just about sold out in the shop and only the products linked below are available now.  So make sure you get some of this lovely range before it all sells out!  

If you look closely, I have done a little masking with texture paste and the Crafter's Workshop Chicken Wire Mask. Again, the very popular banners are such an easy way to add embellishments to your layouts and so versatile as they can be made out of any piece of patterned paper.  The little chipboard cogs are by Imaginarium Designs are the perfect addition to any boyish layout.  Here  I  wound around some red twine around the cogs to give them a mechnical feel and tie the cogs into the theme of my layout about Liam and his creations.  There are lots of new chipboard in the shop and it is such an easy item to add to your layout and here I have just inked them up with a little grey ink and glue dotted them to my page.

I just wanted to share with you another layout I have made using papers from the gorgeous MME Miss Caroline line.  I just love the wood grain effect papers which are so popular right now in the scrapbooking world.  These types of papers provide an almost organic backdrop in which to showcase your photos and of course some of the lovely embellishments that go along with these collections.  Without causing your layout to be too busy!  Again, doilies are featured heavily in this collection and I just wanted to showcase this aspect of my background paper so I fussy cutted around the doily and along the edge of the pattern which allowed me to then slip  my photo, a couple of strips of patterned paper and another circle under this pattern.  I then used this wood shaped banner die cut as a template to create the little banner off to the side as well.

DT Inspiration with Michelle

Hi everyone,

I'm excited to share with you my first DT inspiration of my new term back on the SP design team.  Can I just say that it has been such a honour to stay on the team with such amazingly talented new designers and some old friends as well!!

This month I received some gorgeous papers and embellishments from the new MME Miss Caroline ranges mixed in with some October Afternoon and some Cosmo Cricket.   I just LOVE the new MME papers... I could go on all day about the gorgeous wood grained papers, the yummy colours and the fantastically priced embellishments but as I get to do another 3 blog posts this month... I might need to save some of my excitedness for the product for future posts.

I created my first layout using a lovely paper from Cosmo Cricket's Material Range.  This patterned paper provided the perfect background paper for my layout as it provided that 'pop' of colour without having a busy pattern to compete with the other patterned papers or my photo.  There is also something about the combo of yellow and denim blue which I just adore at the moment.  I created a cute banner border and cut out some doilies from Cheery Lynn Designs to add a bit more femininity and interest to my layout.  Lastly, I have embellished the layout using the MME Dolled Up Living Rubons and MME Dolled Up Favourite Label Stickers.  The label stickers were a perfect way to add strip journalling on my layout and add interest in my title.

And returning to the team......Michelle Whorwood

I am thrilled to welcome Michelle back onto the team for 2012.  Her style is an ever popular one both online and instoreand will complement the team well.

 Hi, my name is Michelle Whorwood and I live in Albany on the North Shore of Auckland, New Zealand with my husband, Gary.  We currently have two kids Liam (7 years) and Taylor Grace (17 months)  and another little bundle on the way in April as well as our very bouncy Retrospoodle dog, Indy.  

I started scrapbooking about 5 years ago when Liam was little and it has been the one hobby that I have ever stuck with long term and I can't think of any reason why I would ever stop.  My scrapbooking style is ever evolving but you will definitely find lots of layers on my layouts and I love trying out new products and testing the boundaries in my scrapbooking.   When I'm not scrapbooking you will find me hanging out with my family, drinking good coffee and shopping!

I would say that Scrapbooking for me is like therapy… I find it very relaxing and it’s often my time out or my ‘me time’. I love that scrapbooking  enables me to preserve my families’ memories, to be creative and allows me to  indulge in some retail therapy all at the same time.
